Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn about making suggestions, asking for suggestions and responding to suggestions through the context of special days. They will listen a modal listening text to help them get ready for the freer speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell a personal anecdote. Show your necklace to the Ss. Tell them it was a present from your mother for your 30th birthday. Ask Ss: -What is your favourite present? Write the question on the board. Get them talk in pairs.

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss will work in pairs to match the new words with their meanings for the listening text. 3 minutes. The words are: idea, buy, tomorrow, sure, watch, get, present W/C Feedback.

Gist Listening (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Tell Ss that they will listen a short text. It's Tom's birthday. Tanya and Simon talk about what present to buy. Listen and answer: What do they decide to buy for Tom's birthday? Write the question on the board. Feedback. Elicit answers from the Ss.

Detailed Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Get them listen to the text again. This time, show them the worksheet and ask them to fill the gaps while listening. Hand out the worksheets for fill the gaps activity. Peer check. W/C Feedback.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Show them the transcript of the listening text and the second gap fill handout. Tell them to fill the gaps by looking at transcript. Peer Check. Feedback. On the W/B write the phrases. Ask the CCQ. Elicit answers from the Ss.Show the sentence stress and intonation for each phrase. Give an oral modal and drill. Write these words' pronounciations and drill: about: /əˈbaʊt/ sure: /ʃɔːr/ idea: /aɪˈdɪə/ think: /θɪŋk/

Controlled practice (5-6 minutes) • to give the Ss an opportunity to use the target language.

Get them do Work Book, ex.4, fill the gaps. Peer check Feedback

Semi controlled speaking activity (10-12 minutes) • to provide students an opprtunity to practice the target language.

1. Make groups of 4. 2. Ask each group to make a list of presents. Show an example on the board: Aslı's list: - a book - a pen - concert ticket... 3. After they made their list, give each group 4 pieces of paper. One paper for each student.Tell them to draw a present on each paper. While they are drawing write -'Happy birthday Maria, this is for you'.-Oh thank you. It's great/lovely. 4. When they finish drawing, pair the groups. Tell them it's everybody's birthday today. 5. Tell them to pick someone from the other group to give their present. Ask them to say the sentences on the board to each other. Monitor. W/C Feedback: Nominate Ss, give a present to them, and repeat the task.
