Main Aims

To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a polite, general conversation in the context of meeting and greeting business partners and customers.

Subsidiary Aims

To provide review and practice of language used for small talk and keeping the conversation going in the context of socialising with business partners.

Procedure (50 minutes)

Warmer/Lead-in (8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In Arabic, how do you meet new people you have never met before? What do you discuss? Is it possible to translate this ritual directly into English?

Pre-Listening (2 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Unit 8 Socialising, Listening 1, Q1

While-Listening #1 (15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Unit 8, Listening 1: Q2, Pg 41 WC to confirm + add other phrases to table.

Post Listening (15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Language Focus Q1 Pg 42, followed by reading Q2, Pg 43. WC to confirm and discuss

Language Focus (10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T to discuss with class Unit 8, LF, Pg 43, no. 3: Use relatively formal language at first. Be polite. Begin questions and requests with polite phrases. If you don't understand or hear something, say so immediately!
