Teaching Practice 2
B1 level

Description

In this lesson Ss are introduced to the language use of verb patterns (v-ing and 'to infinitive')

Materials

Abc Exercises 1,2,3
Abc Answer key for exercise 2a

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification/review and practice of verb patterns (v-ing vs ‘to infinitive’) with adjectives to express opinions in the context of communication.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have had practice using the verb patterns with a speaking activity in the context of communication.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the context of giving opinions

Project a picture on the WB in which two people are texting while on a date. Ask Ss the following questions: " What do you see in the picture?", "Where do you think they are?", "What do you think they are doing?", "Do you think it's polite to text other people when you are on a date?", " Do you ever do that?", " Do you it's appropriate to do that?". Elicit Ss' answers.

Highlighting target language (10-13 minutes) • To focus Ss on the activity and introduce the target language

Get Ss into pairs. Chest the HO and show it to the Ss. Tell them to complete the exercise using the adjectives from the previous lesson's listening. Give Ss exercise 1. Give them 2 minutes to complete the exercises. Write the sentences on the WB. ("It's ____ being on call all the time." "It's ______ to relax, sometimes." "It's _______ how much I miss the buzz of work.") Nominate some Ss to fill in the gaps. Ask them the following CCQs: " Is she happy about being on call all the time?", " Is s/he able to relax?", " How does s/he feel about it?", " Does she miss it a lot or just a little bit?".

Clarifying the target language (12-13 minutes) • To cover meaning, form and pronunciation

As the meaning is clarified in the previous exercise, T moves onto form and how to construct sentences on the model sentences. Underline these on the WB: " Being on call", "To relax", "How much". Ask Ss "What part of the speech are these?". Circle the adjectives and ask Ss the same question. Then ask Ss to identify the verb. Then write the form of each sentence on the WB. (" it's + adjective+ -ing form of the verb, " it's+ adjective+ infinitive", "it's+ adjective+ question word".) Drill each sentence. And show the stress of the adjectives on the WB.

Language Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide oral practice and use the language productively.

Get Ss into groups. Show them the HO of exercise 2a and explain them the activity saying: " Now let's looks at this. Here are some words that need to be unjumbled. But you only have 3 minutes to complete it. Groups who complete it the first should shout 'BANANA'." Project the answer key on the WB after the activity. Drill a few sentences and then ask the Ss to discuss in pairs if they agree with the statements and why? Monitor them as they discuss together.

Speaking task (8-10 minutes) • To enable Ss practice the target language orally

Show Ss the HO of exercise 3 a&b and tell them that there are some situations given in the exercise. Tell them to think on what they could add to the list individually in 2 minutes. Tell them " You are going to tick the things you think are a waste of time". ICQ: " Are you going to work alone or in pairs?", "What are you going to tick?", "Will you add your own ideas to the list?" "How much time do you have?" After they are finished, get them into groups to discuss their opinions.
