Description

In this lesson students will use the functional language in order to give and react to surprising news. First they see other people reacting to news and then they practice in their groups.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation. in the context of Giving and reacting to surprising news

  • To provide clarification of language used for Giving and reacting to surprising news in the context of Dreams

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will look at pictures of 3 people talking on the phone and they different face impressions . Students should come up with different news that explain these impressions on this people's faces. They will discuss in small groups. Later on as the fd they will listen to the listening and check their answers.

Exposure (10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will ask the students to look at the photos carefully and match the pictures with the speakers and also see if their stories were correct. Students will listen . We check their answers together as a w-c activities. I hang some pictures on the wall and give group on adjective students should stand up walk around the class and match the pictures and adjectives together they should discuss in their groups. Then students will listen to listening to match the adjectives and people together. FB can be w-c activity because it's very short.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will ask the students what types of phrases did the speakers used in order to give adive and try to elicit some of the phrases. Then I give them cut hand outs and ask them to divide the sentences into quite formal and quite informal categories. They will put the hand outs in order. FB will be answer keys, I use the projector to show the answers and practice the intonation and CCQs. Students will match the suitable replies to the similar meaning on the right, then students will listen to listening suitable reaction to surprising news. They will listen and then we drill the pronunciation.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will be divided to four groups, in each group will be giving small piece of paper (for e.g. formal shocking news) they should create news and when all the groups are done,one group read its news and students in another group decide to react correctly to the news. I'll observe them write their mistakes down, late error correction. Students will be divided to A and B. each will receive a piece of news and they should read it their partner, they do role play.
