Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, Ss are going to differentiate between present simple and continuous usage through listening.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Ss by the end of this lesson are going to be able to descibe something happening now as well as asking questionsuse using the present progrssive tense through speaking.

Procedure

Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be shown an image through PPT that has colored clothes. Will elicit ideas from them till they say that what they can see is "colors and cloths"

Pre-Listening (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Through PPT, will show them 4 images of jumper, trainers, scarf and skirt. Via the pics, will elicit the meanings of these vocabularies as they will listen to a recording that has them in the following stage.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening task

Ss will get the HO of "What are they wearing?" In groups of 3, Ss will be given 1 minute to take a look with each other on the gaps and try to predict the answers. Ss will listen to the recording 13.2 and fill in the gaps. Ss will listen again if needed. Answer key will be displayed via PPT. Then will drill the linking between - ing and a vowel in the sentence "he's wearing a grey suit." For more drilling using questions, T will write a big question mark on the board to show Ss they are going to practice questions. T plays recording 13.3 and Ss just listen. T plays the recording again and Ss repeat chorally. Via PPT will show them (What’s he doing? /`Wɒts hɪ `duːŋ/ and What are they doing? /`Wɒt ə ðeɪ `duːŋ/) and drill them.

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss while in pairs will get the 'Asking questions' HO. Ss will ask their partner "what the person in the pic is doing?" and their partner will replay using the present progressive tense. Will paly the recording 13.4 for the Ss to check their answers. Answer key will be hanging in 2 places on the wall. T then demonstrates the meaning of 'mime' to Ss Each S has to mime to his/her partner and partner has to guess the answer using the present continuous. Ss change roles after each mime. If we still have time, Ss will listen to the recording 13.5 then get the HO of "Nigel at work' in order to fill in the gaps Ss check answers with each other. Answer key will be available on PPT in case Ss need it.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

This is an information gap using different pictures. Ss will be divided into pairs (A&B). Ss should not look at each other's pics. In pairs, Ss are going to ask questions to find six differences between two similar pictures of a family. They will circle the part of their picture when they find a difference. I will drill the type of questions Ss can ask, e.g. 'what is the father wearing?' 'is the mother listening to music?', etc. Ss will work in closed pairs. I will monitor and help if necessary. Ss will hang their HOs on the wall after they finish and compare their pics with each other to check they have found the differences.
