This lesson presents the polite way of asking for something and offering something to someone

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide student with the suitable way of asking and offering something using would like and some/ any

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with a listening audio to present the target language

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To arouse students' interest in the topic of " food and polite requests and offers

To show the students the pictures of a shop and a pharmacy where a man buys something To elicit some words related to these places [cheese -milk- soap- shampoo- medicine]

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through listening to a dialogue

To provide the student with a dialogue from which they will be exposed to the target language.In order to notice asking for something politely. To give the student enough time to listen and complete the activity through listening. In pairs they will check their answers Teacher will monitor and notice any error.

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

On the OHP the teacher highlights the target language "I'd like some ham, please Would you like some cheese? Do you have any Emmental We don't have any emmental

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the function, form and pronunciation of polite requests

Teacher uses the OHP to show the marker sentences. Ask some questions to elicit the function, form and models the correct pronunciation. Students discuss in groups the function, meaning of polite requests Then on whiteboard the teacher will clarify the stress and intonation of the target language by using different colours

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher gives students a handout to fill in the gaps with the target language and set the time of 2 minutes. Students will do it individually, The teacher will play an audio for the students to check their answers. The teacher will monitor while they listen to the audio

controlled practice #2 (3-6 minutes) • To provide students with more practice in the target language

In case there is time, Students will be divided into pairs...and practice this small dialogue A : Would you like a drink? Yes, please What would you like? Orange juice Teacher monitors and gives help if needed.
