By the end of this lesson Ss will have practice their listening for gist and detailed comprehension. The lesson starts with a slide show related to the main event's in teacher's life( in this case mine). This is followed by listening tasks starting from earier (gist listening) and followed by more challenging (detailed listening) in the context of Cheng and Donna's life stories.Finally Ss will be promted to speak about main events in their lives.


Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed information listening practice in the context of Cheng and Donna's life stories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide semi-controlled speaking practice using question prompts to provide further consolidation.


Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and get students' interest

Pre-Listening (1-2 minutes) • To pre-teach vocabulary

To pre-teach vocab:grew up, met, got married. Write on the board.

While Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task.

Listen to the audio and answer the question: Where do they live? Read the options and choose the correct answer. HO task_1(fold in half), ICQ: what question do you need to answer? Play the audio. FB: check the answers in groups. group A answers about Cheng, group B about Donna.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging listening for specific information tasks

HO task_2(unfold)Read the sentences(1 min).Listen to the audio and put the sentences in order. (1,2,3......) ICQ: How many sentences will you listen to about Cheng?(6) Donna?(8) Play the audio 2.62 FB: Check the answers in groups. project answer key on the board.

While Listening #3 (8-10 minutes) • To check Ss' comprehension of the information through listening for details

Listen to the audio again. Answer the questions. HO task_3 (back side)

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Task3: HO2. Answer the questions. Work in pairs: S"A" asks the questions from the HO_Task_4 S"B" answers the questions(use your answers). Change the roles. FB: Teacher asks Ss one of the questions about their partner and Ss answer.
