TP:6 Regrets

Description

In this lesson, students will be focusing on the topic, regrets. They will read a text about regrets and survey results related to regrets. For pre-reading, students will be pre-taught some important vocabulary, and have a discussion about a projected picture related to the text which will be included in the while-reading part. Followed by some exercises and a post-reading freer practice discussion.

Procedure

Lead in (4-5 minutes) • to set the context and prepare students for their tasks

-Project the photo from the article on the wb -Ask students who she is, how she feels. Is she upset? Is she thoughtful? -Elicit the word 'regret' on the wb and ask for the meaning and elicit an example sentence, 'I regret not studying harder at school last year' -Then get students to discuss their latest regret with each other

Pre-teach vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • to pre-teach vocabulary related to the article

-project the words and idioms: Lay the blame on some else's door, dwell on and getting on the property ladder. -Ask Ss if they know the meaning, and go through them with the class. -project the definitions so they can take a glance at them while reading the article

pre-reading (3-5 minutes) • to prepare students for the while reading task

-arrange the students seating and divide them into groups -Show students the material and give instructions on what they should do, Ss should decide whether the sentences are true of false -distribute the materials -while they are discussing with their peers, I will monitor them

While reading (7-10 minutes) • to allow the students to check their predictions while reading for specific information

-Tell students they will now read the article -Give students the HOs -Ss will first read individually and check if their answers where correct -Then they will go through the text with their groups and discuss their answers while I am monitoring - I will go through some of their thoughts and answers as a WC -Then hand out the answers and give them a minute to check and discuss

post reading (8-10 minutes) • to give an oppurtunity to Ss to do a more personalized exercise using receptive skills

-Tell Ss that they will be given 20 sentences. I will emphasize that they should guess what the first 5 are in order. (give example) -I will hand out the sentences to each group -They will work together, while I monitor -Ss will then go around and check what the other groups have done -Play the audio 3.17 and check answers

Freer speaking (6-7 minutes) • To provide ss with freer speaking practice for sub aim after a quick form check

-Write I wish....., and I regret...... on the Wb and ask students to tell me which follows which form (+ past perfect and +not+ Verb-ing) -I will give students 2 minutes to write two sentences starting with I wish I hadn't and I regret not, and then they will talk about what they most regret in the past in their groups -I will monitor and take notes of any mistakes for feedback

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • to provide delayed error correction and clarity

-Write 2-3 sentences Ss have written or said. At least one should be an incorrect form -Go through the sentences with the class to clarify which ones a correct and incorrect
