Description

The lesson's context will be the 'reliability of the information'. In the lesson the Ss will be introduced to new vocabulary that appear in the text they are going to read which is about the reliability of the information on Wikipedia. They will be introduced to various means to get information through a presentation as a warm-up. They will do lexis exercises and then they will engage in a speaking activity in groups regarding different types of information and the lexis they have acquired.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in reading for gist, detail and deducing meaning from context, in the context of whether you can believe what you read.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce/review and practice vocabulary to talk about facts and information. To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To get student's interest in the topic of 'fact or fiction'

T gets the Ss into pairs. T sticks various pictures about various means of information on the WB to introduce the context of 'can you believe what you read'. T writes "fact or fiction" on the WB. Ask questions to the Ss. 'What's this?', 'What kind of information can we find in it?', ' Do you use it to get information?', ' Do you trust the information you get from this source? Why? Why not?'.

Prediction task (3-5 minutes) • To encourage Ss to predict the content of the reading passage

T hands out the title of the reading passage from English Unlimited Int Ss Bk, U 1.2, page 8, which is 'Can you believe what you read?'. T asks the Ss to guess what the reading passage might be about. T elicits answers.

Initial Reading Task (6-8 minutes) • To provide learners with general understanding to get an overview of the text

T will get the Ss into small groups. T asks Ss to discuss what they know about Wikipedia. T hands out the subheadings from exercise 2 from English Unlimited Int Ss Bk, U 1.2, page 8, letting Ss to read the subheadings. T hands out the reading passage from English Unlimited Int Ss Bk, U 1.2, page 8. T gives instructions for the activity saying "Now I want you to read each paragraph from the reading passage. Match the paragraphs to the subheadings (demonstrating) in 3 minutes .' ICQ: " How many minutes to match?" "What will you match?". WC FB.

Detailed Reading Task (13-15 minutes) • To practice reading for detailed comprehension for learners to understand the text in depth.

T asks Ss to turn out their reading passage HOs. T hands out exercise 3 from English Unlimited Int Ss Bk, U 1.2, page 8 and asks Ss to read the questions. T asks Ss to discuss the questions in pairs without looking at the reading passage for 2 minutes. The T tells the Ss to read the text and answer the questions individually. Wait for them to finish while monitoring. After they are finished get them into groups and tell them to discuss their answers. Then provide them with an answer key.

Vocabulary activity (5-8 minutes) • To enable Ss to identify the vocabulary from the context of the reading passage

T gets the Ss into pairs. T hands out exercise 4 from English Unlimited Int Ss Bk, U 1.2, page 8. T does an example with them to demonstrate the activity. T elicits answers and drills.

Follow-up Speaking Activity (7-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to personalise the topic and develop oral skills

T hands out exercise 5 from English Unlimited Int Ss Bk, U 1.2, page 9, and get the Ss into pairs. T gives Ss 2 minutes to complete the exercise from the vocabulary acquired from the previous exercise. T asks them to shout "BANANA" if they finish early. T hands out the answer key. T gets all the Ss to stand up. T tells them to ask and answer the questions with each other. T monitors and takes some general FB to find out what they talk about.
