Main Aims

  • To provide students practice in the skills of listening for gist and detail in the context of an old song

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of old song "Hello!" and express their appreciation of old things
  • To enable students to understand vocabulary related to the song "Hello!"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To arouse students' interest in the topic of "Times Past/ old Song"

The teacher shows some pictures of a famous singer using the OHP. The teacher asks Do you know him? Have you heard any of his song? Teacher elicit words about his job . Ss find out about his career.

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To get the students thinking about the listening with a picture and guessing what they'll listen for

The teacher show the students some pictures and elicit some words and listen to what they would say about them. The teacher pre-teach these words. The teacher set the task listening for gist. The teacher would ask them what kind of song you will listen to? Is the singer talks to someone or to him self? Students listen and see if their guess were right or wrong

While-Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening tasks

The teacher divide the students into groups of three provide the students with cut-up papers of some words mentioned in the song The students will listen and try to grab the words they hear The student with the highest number of words wins Competition creates excitement among the students Teacher monitors

While- listening #2 (4-6 minutes) • To provide the student with a more challenging listening task

The teacher play the record for listening for detail. The students listen to find the answer of this question What are the parts of the body you hear in the song? Students listen and count. In pairs they check their answers . Then the teacher do Feedback

While-Listening #3 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

The teacher gives a handout with Fill in the gaps. First, the students read the lyrics of the song to be familiar with its words. So the students will have an idea of what to concentrate about while listening. The Students listen and fill in the gaps. The teacher plays the song one more time for the students to complete any missing words. Then check in groups. Teacher monitors and check their answers

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher ask the students to write the name of an old song and let their partner guess it. In pair they are going to talk about their favourite old songs. Teacher monitor and listen to them while they are speaking and takes notes .
