Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*** SHOW *** Show a set of images. -ask ss to think about connections between the images - what is the connection between these images (addiction) -3 minutes -tell you partner and compare answers *** ICQ *** So what are you going to do? Read or talk about the images? Are you going to work alone? How long for?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

*** GIST READING *** Tell ss you are giving them a text. - When I say start you have 1 minute - quickly go through the text find the main idea - is this a sad or happy story? - Read the text alone. *** ICQ *** - How much time do you have? - Are you going to read every word or just get the main idea of the text? - Do you start immediately or when I say start? - Read alone or as a group? *** GIVE THE TEXT*** Give the text - do not start until Teacher says so. *** STOP *** Stop the activity. *** PEER CHECK *** -share answer with your partner -partner, I want you to ask: "Why?" -discuss for 1 minute, then switch.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

*** SPECIFIC INFO *** Give instruction for next task - read again - arrange events of the story in the right order - paste on WB. -Ss will be given cutouts of events from the story. -Arrange them in your group. -When you have agreed, paste the right order on the WB. -You have 5 minutes. *** ICQ *** -are you going to paste the answers first or arrange them first? -working alone or as a group? -what do you have to do at the end? -how long are you going to do this?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

*** DETAILED READING *** Tell ss they are going to read again and have more time to read for details. - This time, read the text in detail and answer the questions on the task sheet. - Work alone. - You have 7 minutes. *** ICQ *** - How much time do you have? - Are you going to read in detail or read quickly? - Work alone or as a group? *** STOP *** Stop the activity. *** START PEER CHECK *** Get ss to share answers with peers and discuss. *** ANSWER KEY *** Teacher hands out the answer key.

Post-Reading/Listening (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

*** FREE PRACTICE - Fluency-based *** Tell ss to get into onion ring position. 2 circles. 1 inner & 1 outer. Ask your partner the question below. Change partners when you hear the phone ring. Demo. Stop the game when you hear the song. Demo. -Think for 2 minutes. If you someone you love so much was addicted to alcohol and is going to die, what will you do to help? *** ICQ *** -do you change partners? when? -people in the inside circle, are you going to move? *** START ONION RING ACTIVITY *** Start. Run for 7-8 minutes. *** EXTRA EXERCISE - if time permits - recall & fluency *** Ask one or two ss to share their partner's answer.
