Main Aims

  • To provide exposure to synonyms and antonyms and provide vocabulary practice for words such as "wealthy, happy, clever, small, and polite" in the context of 'Describing People'.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice from materials that include words such as "wealthy, happy, clever, small, and polite" in the context of 'Describing People'.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

WB : Teacher projects an image of people with mixed facial expressions. ELICIT : Let's look at these people. Can you describe them? What can we say about the photo? Does everyone share the same feeling? Is everyone happy? TASK : Instruction: - Work in groups. - Make a list of things you see. - 3 minutes. Do an ICQ. FB: Teacher checks answers, and gives WB FB.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

WB: Teacher shows images to express specific descriptions: - wealthy - happy - smart / clever - small - polite - Ask ss for similar words. - What do we call words with similar meanings? (Synonyms) WB: Teacher shows the opposite of 'polite' (rude), next to the 'polite' image. - Ask ss for synonyms. Elicit. - Compare with the 'polite' image. Ask ss are they the same? Different? What do we call this? (Opposite/antonym). GW Task: Instruction: - Work in groups. - Find antonyms for ‘wealthy’ and 'lazy'. - 3 minutes Teacher monitors. Get students to write answers on WB. Teacher checks and discusses answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

AIM: Give ss practice with identifying synonyms and antonyms. TASK: Instructions: - Work on your own. - Look at the sentences. - Mark 'S' fo synonym or 'A' for antonym. - 3 minutes. ICQ: - Are you going to work with your group or on your own? - What are you going to do? - And how much time? TASK: - Discuss with your groups. - 3 minutes. Teacher monitors and checks answers. Teacher provides WB FB.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will be given controlled practice from the coursebook. Teacher will give instruction for the task. Check via ICQ. TASK 1: Instructions: - Work on your own. - Complete the conversation. - Use synonyms. - 3 minutes. ICQ FB: Teacher checks answers and provides the answer key. Teacher will give HO based on p.52, task 3 to practice synonyms, and gives students 3 minutes to complete it. TASK Instructions: - Work on your own. - Complete the table. - Use antonyms. - 3 minutes. ICQ Teacher will ask students to peer check for 3 minutes. Then teacher will project the table on WB and ask students to write answers on the blanks on the WB. Answer key will also be provided. TASK 2: Teacher will then provide students with a second controlled task. Teacher gives out instruction for the second task and do an ICQ. Teacher gives students HO based on p. 44 task 4 for students to practice antonyms. Students will have 3 minutes to complete the task. Teacher will ask students to peer check for 3 minutes. Then teacher will project questions on WB and ask students to write answers on the blanks on the WB. Answer key will also be provided.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify pronunciation of the TL

Drill pronunciation based on answers in the previous stages. At first instance an error is spotted, ask WC how do we pronounce it? Then model and drill. Limit to 5 sentences. Questions?

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

This stage will require ss to practice speaking with the TL. MINGLE TASK using WB text: Ss will be asked to agree with another using this structure: (not very) + antonym. Instructions: - Group ss using 1 & 2 - Get no.1 ss to STAND UP - Give pink paper to no.1 ss - Ss with pink paper will ask questions on WB - Ss without pink paper will use the antonym in her/his reply. - Swap roles. - 3-4 minutes. - Teacher shows example on WB SHOW: Teacher will project examples on WB. Start the task! Teacher will provide error correction and demo of pronunciation if ss show they have trouble with the TL. MINGLE TASK Instructions: - Create a sentence about yourself using the word given on WB: expensive(cheap) OR ugly (good-looking,pretty) - Partner replies with the sentence: 'not very' + antonym - Swap roles. - 5 minutes. Extra words for backup: Old (new) Noisy (peaceful)
