Description

This lesson is going to introduce learners different types of reading such as reading for gist, for detail and for inference through a text entitled "Trading Ages" in the context of being older.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get learners interested in the topic

Teacher writes the quote at the top of p.18 on the board and the name of the person who said it. Teacher asks learners in groups to think what it means and if they agree with the quote or not.

Pre-Reading 1 (1-2 minutes) • To get learner predict what the text is about

Teacher shows the picture of Karoline and Nick and elicits ideas from class (ex 2a).

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • For learners to get the gist

Teacher groups the learner into small groups, provide them with the answer key of (ex 2a), elicits the meaning of "Trading Ages", asks learners in their groups to look at the highlighted words to guess their meaning (remind them that they are all related to the body) and check the answers of the highlighted words they come up with (ex 2b).

Pre-reading 2 (2-4 minutes) • Further prediction to engage Learners more

The teacher tells learners that they are gong to read the rest of the article, but before doing so, they will discuss 3 questions in either PW/GW in order to further predict what they are going to read. The teacher tries to elicit some ideas before moving to the next point (ex 2c).

While-Reading #2 (9-11 minutes) • Reading for detail

The teacher sets a time limit to groups and explains to them that they are going to read the rest of the article then answer the questions of (ex 2c). Moreover, the teacher asks groups to compare their answers with each other, the teacher checks the answers with the whole class then provides them with the answer key.

While-Reading #3 (8-10 minutes) • Reading to infer

The teacher informs the learner that they are going to read the whole text again to answer 9 questions with the initials of 'N', 'K', or 'B' for both. The teacher hand learners the HO, sets a time limit, let learners discuss their answers in their groups then get them the answer key at last (ex 2e).

Post-Reading #1 (3-5 minutes) • To follow-up with some further language work

The teacher sets a time limit to the groups of learners to look at the highlighted verb phrases and to try to guess their meanings. The teacher checks the answers with the WC then get them the answer key (ex 2f).

Post-Reading #2 (3-5 minutes) • To allow Ss to respond to the text and give their opinions (productive skill of speaking).

The teacher leads this stage as an open discussion for the whole class.
