Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice gist reading by a task to answer a multiple choice question. They will also practice contextual guessing with a focus on TL vocabulary. They will then practice speaking with focus on fluency to discuss what they think about the topic.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading and contextual guessing practice using a text about success in the context of luck

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of various words in the context of luck
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of luck

Procedure

Lead-in/Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T ask Ss - If you found 1000 dollar, what would that be? [luck] - Are you lucky? - Do you think luck is important? Discuss in their groups.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

T give Ss HO1, and explains that they will be doing part A. T ask ICQs: Are you reading alone? Which part will you answer? T give Ss the reading text, keeps the text face down until they all have it. Tell Ss they have 2 minutes, tell them to start. Tell Ss to flip the text face down again and stop reading, check their answers in pairs. WCFB

While-Reading #2 (16-18 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging contextual guessing reading tasks, with focus on vocabulary

Tell Ss unfold the paper and do part B now. Read the questions and make sure Ss understand them, Ss flip the paper and read again to answer the questions in 5 minutes. Ss will check answers in their groups. WCFB T Clarify any issues with meaning T drills pronunciation of TL

Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T ask Ss what they think about the Text T ask Ss what are your factors of success. Discuss 22 success factors in their groups WCFB
