Description

In this lesson the students will undertake a listening task about the american dream.They will listen to different speakers as they give their opinions about the subject. The learners will identify the pessimistic and optimistic speakers in the audio and show the other side of the American dream.The students will then do a matching task on the opinions and the speakers and later on discuss various topics on the subject.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about American Dream in the context of being pessimistic or optimistic about our dreams

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of the dreams we had and our future expectations

Procedure

lead in (3-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of the lesson and prepare the students for the listening activity and give them

Create some visual context for the topic of the listening Project on the WB the questions What other aspects are associated with the american dream? Is the american dream achievable? Ss discuss in pairs then do a whole class feedback.

Preteach vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To unblock key words needed to comprehend the listening

using the visuals from the lead in elicit from the students Is the character in this picture positive about life? What would we refer to someone who is positive about life? And what would we refer to people negative about life? Ss should come up with words such as optimistic and pessimistic. CCQs

Listening for gist (3-9 minutes) • To encourage the students to listen for general understanding of the text

Ask the students to guess what the listening is about and what kind of characters they expect in the text Name the character of the people in the listening. Play the Audio Ss in pairs discuss DO a whole class feedback

Listening for details (8-12 minutes) • To practice listening for detailed comprehension of the texrt

Give the Ss the instructions listen and match each speaker to an opinion Give the written down opinions play the audio Play the audio again if necessary or only the parts that the students have a problem Ss do the matching exercise individually then compare with their peers Project the opinions on the WB Let the students put up the answers on the WB Project the answer key on the WB

post listening task (8-10 minutes) • give the students an opportunity to react and develop oral fluency on the topic

Divide the class in group of 4 In your groups discuss the following questions Give the questions Ss discuss the questions Rearrange the groups so that each group has someone from a different group Ss discuss their findings from the previous groups During the disscusions monitor the Ss and take notes for feedback Give one Ss from each group an opportunity to share the groups finding

If time activity (2-4 minutes) • To provide freer practice of the Target language

Ss mantain their groups What are your thoughts on what the future holds for your country Get one or Two Ss to talk about what they have discussed If there are any errors do error correction
