Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the gerunds and the infinitives in the context of the right job

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the right job for people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show two pictures of two men who is happy and unhappy with their jobs. Ask, how they feel and think. What their job might be. Disscus in groups. Personalize it by asking their current or previous jobs Is/ was it the right job for you? Are/Were you happy or not?

Test #1 (4-6 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The Right Job For You Questionnaire Give the handout and tell Ss they have 3 mins to finish it. It is an individual task. After they finish, tell them to swap their sheets. Project the Answer Key on the board They will check correct and wrong answers. Ask them about wrong ones. Focus on only wrong ones. A very quick error correction.

Teach # Guided Discovery (19-23 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Give the second (guided task) handout. Look at the first part and fold the paper. Tell the Ss to find the sentences from the text and complete the rules. (clarification for meaning) When they finish check in the group. Second Part : Questions and answers. They will answeer the questions about gerund form. After they finish, they check the answers in pairs. WC check and clarify the target language. For Pronunciation: Listen to the track 46. They will drill with the audio. Then they will pass the infinitive form. Check the text again and find the rules. Check WC. Then try to answer the questions on the HO for infinitives. Check in pair. WC (clarification for meaning). Listen to the track 47 and drill the sentences to show sentence stress. Clarify the form on the WB.

Test #2 (5-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Plan A If there is enough time to do it; Controlled Practice: Give the HO. and tell them to circle the correct one on the sheet. Individual. They will decide if the answer is gerund or infinitive. Check answers in pairs. Answer Key will be on the board or on the wall. They go and check. Plan B Semi Controlled : , If there is no time pass the second exercise on the HO. They will choose five categories and will write few sentences related to the topic using gerunds and infinitive forms.

Free practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Option 1: Ss will speak about what they have written in the semi controlled practice and will discuss their ideas. Option 2: Go back to text again and tick the sentences that they strogly believe. Then give them the right job for you results. They calculate their ticks and see what is the best job for them written on the paper.
