Description

In this lesson the students will practice a receptive skill, as they listen for gist and specific information. The activities are based on travel plans.Students will also practise a productive skill as a sub aim, as they use the language focus within role play.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of receptive skill listening. Listening for gist and detail, through recorded dialouges, regarding travel plans.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide productive skills practice, through speaking in role play in the context of a travelling scenario.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T writes 'Travel plans' and 'How can I book my ticket'?on W/B. Ss brain storm their ideas T notes ideas and asks what other things we may need to think about before taking a trip. P/W Ss discuss with their partner.Ss up to W/B and notes their partners ideas.

Pre-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T writes an example on board of who we talk to, and what kinds of things we talk about when in the process of booking a ticket to travel.Ss brainstorm ideas.T writes Ss ideas on board. Ss look at an example of a travel agents question, and its meaning P/W T elicits H/O Ss work together to match agents questions to their meanings. Ss work with another pair and cross check their answers. Ss check with answer key found on walls of class room and make their corrections.

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with a less challanging task to enable them to practice listening for gist

Ss will look at the list of questions asked by the travel agent, used in the previous activity, then listen to a recording of the agent asking the same questions. H/O S puts the questions into order to coincide with what they heard. P/W Ss check their answers with a partner Ss give feedback to T

While-Listening #2 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task to listen for specific information.

H/O , blanked memo for flight details to Boston. Ss listen to a telephone conversation in order to fill in the specific information needed. Ss listen again and check their answers. W/B T shows memo on board Ss-T writes answers in memo on board.

practice #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide practice of language and to set context for next stage of lesson

W/B Ss match pictures e.g.passport,sharp items,hand luggage e.t.c to the phrases/words shown on board. H/O S fills in the blanked conversation using the phrases shown. Ss listen to a recording of this conversation and corrects any mistakes.

practice # 2 (3-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to extend, practice and use what Ss have learned in this lesson.

T adds an extra possible questions and its answer for the previous conversation, up on W/B and asks Ss to brainstorm some of their own. P/W.Pairs are named passenger and agent. Ss engage in conversational drama using set dialouge or their own questions and answers. T monitors, correcting bad language used.

Further practice and round up (5-7 minutes) • To extend dialouge and speaking practice.

H/O Ss fill in the gaps completing the goodbye activity . P/W Ss swap roles and partners and proceed into role play again, this time as a passenger,and a friend saying goodbye. T moitors and again and corrects bad language (depending on what time allows, corrections can be highlighted on board or during actual monitoring as in previous stage.)
