Description

In this lesson, Ss learn/review simple past to talk about completed actions in the past. Simple past will be contextualized using a reading briefly and then language from the text will be highlighted and clarified before moving onto further controlled and semi-controlled practice. Finally, ending with practice through a speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

(Project lead-in slide on WB) In pairs, ask each other these questions. WCFB: where did _________'s grandparents get news? (Ask 2 Ss) (Taking a vote via raised hands) How many people usually read the newspaper? (Raising hand) listen to the news on the radio? read/watch the news on the internet? watch the news on the tv? So most of the class usually gets the news by __________________

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

(Distribute news history HO) Quickly read the text to find the answers. Work alone. PWFB: Check your answers in pairs.

Clarification - Meaning and form (7-9 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the target language

Answer these questions, and fill out the bottom alone. Work in pairs. PWFB: (Distribute the AK) Check you answers

Clarification - Pronunciation (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the pronunciation of the target language

Change the headlines from present tense to past tense. Use time expression as your first word(s) or last word(s). (Write the example on the board. Elicit the answer from the Ss) "Teachers demand more money from the government." Where is the verb? [demand] How do we change it to past tense? Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

(Put Ss into groups of 3. Count off 1, 2, 3, ... depending on number of Ss) In your groups, each person draw one picture and one verb. Create news headlines about the picture using the verb. (Demo the activity. Elicit 2 more examples from Ss.) WCFB: Error correction
