Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (advert and jargon) (0-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1) Show them a video of my favourite advert (Coca Cola Ad) 2) Tell them why I like them(Coca Cola: touches the heart because it depicts the relationship of brothers so accurately, I have two boys of my own; I can relate to this and it makes me so emotional. In a song the ad tells that brotherly love is above every friendship as blood is thicker than water and brothers always have eachother's back no matter how much they tease each other. 3) Make them hear the Coca Cola jingle (elicit vocab) 4) Show them the Coca Cola slogan (elicit vocab) 5) Show them the Coca Cola logo (elicit vocab) 5) Show them the Coca Cola brands (elicit vocab)

Exposure (slogans around class) (0-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1) Divide the class into three groups and stick three popular but familiar advertising slogans around three corners of the class a) I'M LOVIN' IT (MC DONALDS) b) BECAUSE YOU'RE WORTH IT (LOREAL) C) JUST DO IT (Nike) 2) Tell Ss to get up and look at them and try to identify the products from their slogans 3) First team to guess the right slogan is the winner 4) Tell them to then in groups of three look at adverts on pg 80 and come up with a good slogan for each (Give time limit 5 mins) 5) Hear some examples

Highlighting ex 2 (0-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1) Write the word slogan on the board 2) Tell Ss now they will look at other words related to advertising; if already elicited in lead in they will be on the board 3) Ask them to match the descriptions in ex 2 with advertising expressions in pairs 4) Give them answer key

Clarification ex 3 (0-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1) In pairs they will look at the advertising jargon in ex 3, refer to a dictionary. 2) Take turns to explain the differences between each pair of words 3) Take feedback 4) Give them handout with definitions

Controlled Practice ex 4 (0-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1) Complete the explanation of Product placement with words from ex 2, individually 2) Check answers in pairs then 3) Give answer key 4) Feedback - elicit opinions regarding product placement, give your opinion (Isn't it infuriating to be watching your fav show etc and have a product placed discreetly for advertisement, for me it puts me off the product) .Recently I saw one of my favourite songs " What do you mean" where Justin Beiber was wearing a Calvin Klein underwear) Give prompts for discussion - nature of product (does it depend if it is breakfast cereal or alcohol) - yes alcohol isnt advertised like this, breakfast cereal more likely) type of audience (children, teenagers, people less financially secure ) - yes the audience has to be seen before placing the product

Semi-Controlled Practice (0-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

1)Divide class into three groups. 2) Give them five minutes to come up with an advertising slogan and brand name for one product 3) Present it to the WC group wise
