Description

In this lesson students will be introduced to the topic of the internet and discuss what things you can do on the net. They will then have a listening where they will listen for gist then for specific info in regards to the different things that can be done using the internet and have a writing/speaking activity that will provide students with clarification of how to use verb+noun collocations when giving recommendations

  • To provide gist and detailed listening in the context of what you can do on the internet

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of useful phrases (verb + noun collocations) that will help with the listening and speaking task
  • To provide fluency writing & speaking practice in the context of making recommendations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic of the internet

-Firstly Ss will watch short video on youtube -T will show the first PP slide then will elicit the topic of the 'internet' from ss -T will ask ss what they use the net for and get a few ideas -T will then elicit what 'www' stands for and the short name for internet 'the Net' -How useful is the internet?

Pre-Listening - Prediction/Exposure Task (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and encourage Ss to predict about the context of the text and give them reason to listen

-Ss will look at the slide with visuals of different things you can do on the net -Ss to work in pairs to discuss what things they do on the net -WCFB get a few answers but not too many -T to note down any errors whilst monitoring (esp. use of verb+noun collocations)

While Listening #1 - Listening for gist (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task for Ss to get a main idea of what the lisrtening is about

-T will inform Ss they will have a listening and give clear instructions they will listen and answer alone -Ss will be shown a slide on PP with 3 statements of what the listening could be about where there is one correct answer. Ss are not to listen for detail and just pick one statement that gives them the main idea of the listening. -After listened once Ss to discuss in pairs -Wc FB and tick the correct box on the WB

While Listening #2 - Listening for detail (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task for Ss to understand the text in depth

-Ss will be given a HO where they have to fill in the gaps whilst listening -The H/O will also be on a slide on the board for teacher to do FB and share answers later on -After listening once, get Ss to check answers in pairs - WC FB -If Ss need to listen again, T to play one more time -WC FB and have Ss to come up to the WB and write answers

Post-Listening - Phrase game (8-8 minutes) • To provide Ss with an activity that will help them learn collocations on what things you can do on the internet

-T wil group Ss into 3s or 4s and have the cut ups in different colours so they can place in the correct column (For e.g. to read - a newspaper etc.) -Ss to come up to WB and put where they think the cut up goes first group to finish wins -Ss to check each others answers -Ss will be given a HO with answer key so the FB wont be as long To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Post Listening Task - Drilling phrases and clarifying form (3-4 minutes) • To have students aware of where they use articles and and how pronounce the phrases

-PP slide with 1 phrase from each column and have Ss to repeat after T and to show articles -Another slide with 2 chosen sentences to clarify form and show connected speech and stress -Give H/O to students that clarifies form

Post Listening Task- Production (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned and learn to give reccommendations

-Ss will be divided into 4 groups (if less Ss - 2groups) -They will be assigned a person on the slide and in their groups they will have to discuss and write about which websites will be useful for each according to what they like to do -When they have come up with top 3 websites for each person -1 person from each group will sit together and discuss about all of the people and come up with one website each that will be the best and why. make sure Ss are using TL -Monitor and take down any errors -Ss to present to class what they came up with - (recommendation) -Delayed error-correction if time
