AT3 - IfType3:Third Conditional
Intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of third conditional sentence structure in the context of past experiences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of 1st and 2nd conditionals sentence structure

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The learners are presented with 2.00 mins of 2.40 mins of an animated movie clip in the context of a surprise birthday party in order to set a context for 3rd conditional structure and engage them in the lesson. They are asked to watch the video and pay attention to what grabs their attention with regard to grammar use. They are instructed to answer the questions in Part A while watching it. Secondly, they watch the video again in order to fill in the 3rd conditional related blanks in order to be exposed to the new structure intending to prepare a base for them to elicit 3rd conditional structure. In the end, feedback is given based on Sts' answers.

Exposure (8-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

After the learners complete the blanks belonging to the 3rd conditional, they are given a worksheet on which there are those specific 3rd conditional sentences from the transcript of the video. In this stage, the learners are completely exposed to the new structure and they are required to individually answer the questions below the target sentences and then compare their answer with a friend next.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In this stage, students are expected to elicit the 3rd conditional grammar formula. There will be some volunteers to complete the formula structure with blanks and by taking turns they will complete it. Upon completion of the grammar rule, a full grammar rule chart along with some information on the ppt show will be shown them.

Clarification (8-9 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After the students elicit the grammar rule, the T will check their understanding with a whole class activity which refers to the target structure sentence from the video and some sentences from following controlled practice activity. In this stage, the learners will also practice pronunciation of contractions introduced in the previous highlight stage.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

On the ppt, there will also be some controlled practice as a whole class activity and as a sample. Then the learners will be grouped as 5 groups including 4 members (ideally, if they all attend to the class). Later on, they will be given 3 pictures with a descriptive sentence in simple past tense and the learners are required to rewrite those sentences in 3rd conditional. When the time is up, they exchange their pics with other groups and compare their answers. In the end, they got back their original pics and T distributes same pics with sentences formed in target structure (at the same same T reflects pics with answers on the screen) and as whole class activity feedback session is given.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In this stage, the learners within their group of 4 will be introduced a board game which requires each group member to throw dice and see on which sentence completion box it stops. Ideally, there will be 5 groups with 4 members each and while they throw dice and complete second half of If sentence, the T will move around and monitor them. In the end, the board game will be reflected on the screen and Sts will be requested to answer each question again under the supervision and feedback from the T.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

This is an internet based game which is planned to be reflected on the screen upon dividing the class in two groups. As each multiple choice question appears on the screen, each group will take their turn to answer questions. The game consists of all types of If-type sentences learnt so far in order to conclude If Sentences unit of the week. This game is planned to play as a time filler activity if time allows.
