Description

Ss will begin with a few discussion questions about expenses and mobile phones. Then they will answer questions gist and detail Qs while listening to 3 related conversations. Then groups will present a viewpoint on a related topic.

Main Aims

  • To provide listening for gist and detail practice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide input for arguing for or against a statement related to the listening.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T writes a # on board, asks Ss if have any idea what means.

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pairs discuss 10 warm-up Qs. Elicists a few responses. Asks again about the # on board. T indicates some potentially unknown vocab in the listenings.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T will ask Ss what conversations might be about. Ss read gist Q and individually listen and try to write an answer for Conversation 1. Group FB , WC check. Individuals listen to Conversations 2 & 3. Group check. (maybe As check with another group). WC check.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss read the Qs to Conversations 1, 2 and 3. T checks Ss understand what being asked. Ss listen to Conversation 1 and try to answer on own. Quick group check. Repeat for 2 and 3. As move to another group and check. As report back to original group. If Ss would like to listen to any or all conversations again, they will. If not, answer key on wall. WC FB.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will ask Bs to move to a new group. Each group will receive a statement, e.g. "It is perfectly acceptable to...," "It is never acceptable to ...", and will prepare a list of reasons supporting this position. Each group will appoint a spokesperson who will read the statement to the class, and give us their reasons. They will have one minute. WC will decide which group made best argument.
