Description

In this lesson students will first look at some photos of some dead famous people and discuss when and where they were born and what their jobs were.The focus of the lesson is practicing past of to be (was and were) and also the negative.

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about dead famous people

Procedure

lead-in (4-5 minutes) • to set the context and activate students' schemata

the teacher will start the lesson with showing the students a photo of Shakespeare which is taken from the book and elicit his name and after doing so he sticks the paragraph which contains information about Shakespeare's birth date and place of birth on the WB and tries to elicit the correct questions to ask about those pieces of information and he writes the questions on the board.

Jigsaw questions (5-7 minutes) • to further practice the form

The student will be given the photos of 8 celebrities adapted from the book.Below each photo there is a short line about the person in the photo and where he or she was born.However, there are two sets of pictures.Students will be divided into two groups and each group has information about some of the celebrities.the students can use the questions that the teacher earlier elicited from them to ask each other about the celebrities' place of birth.after pairwork the teacher takes whole class feedback.

prediction (7-9 minutes) • to elicit and exploit another form of question with TL

The teacher elicits the question "what was his/her job? and then gives them a list of jobs and asks them to match the jobs with celebrities in pairs.after pairwork the teacher plays the listening activity and asks the students to check their answers and also write the celebrities date of birth in the gaps.after that the students check their answers for a minute in pairs and then the teacher takes a whole class feedback.

Controlled practice (5-6 minutes) • to expose the students to more examples of target language

the teacher will show a photo of Princess Diana to the students and ask elicit her name.then he will draw a family tree on the board and stick Princess Diana's photo alongside with her family members photos on the board.then he will give the students a gap-fill handout. the students will be asked to take a look at it and do it individually for a minute and then check in pairs.After that the correct answers are checked one more time as a whole class activity and also the students are asked to come to the board and write the celebrities' information on the board.

clarification of pronunciation (4-6 minutes) • to familiarize the students with the correct pronunciation of the target language

the teacher will write some examples of the sentences used in the task to clarify the pronunciation.he will get the students to repeat the correct form a few time chorally and individually.

Semi-controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • to encourage the students to use target language to make sentences about the picture

The teacher will refer the students to a picture of Princess Diana's family and tell them that the photo belongs to the past and gets them to look at the questions on cut-ups and in pairs discuss them for 3 minutes.after that the teacher gets whole class feedback.

Freer practice (5-7 minutes) • to encourage the students to use target language to make conversations

the teacher shows the students a photo of his family and tells them about where he was and who he was with that day and then asks the students to show each other their family photos and talk about where they were and who they were with that time.then the teacher asks some students randomly to talk about their partner's photos.
