Description

In this lesson, students learn and practice to use the Present Continuous through a guided discovery worksheet which contains the examples from the reading text about marriage statistics in the UK. Students are engaged to the lesson by some questions about the texts or some pictures about it and then are given the GD worksheet. They answer the questions individually

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the present continuous in the context of weddings in the UK and Turkey

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of weddings and present situations

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T prepares the materials and sets the scene for the lesson. T greets the class and ask how they feel in order to build rapport. T asks the following questions: 1. Are you having a good time? 2. Do you enjoy studying English?

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T writes one example of the Present Continuous on the board. T asks the C if it is a continuous sentence or not to elicit YES. T hands out the copy of the reading text and asks the Ss to underline all the examples of the Present Continuous in the text. Ss do the activity and check the answers with their partners. T provides the AK.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T tell the class that they are going to read some examples from the text and answer some questions. T provides the GD worksheet to the Ss. Ss read the model sentences and answer the questions in the Meaning section. Ss check their answers with their partners. T provides the AK. T instructs the Ss to fill in the gaps with parts of speech in the FORM section with parts of speech. Ss fill in the gaps and check their answers with their partners. T provides the AK.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T provides the CP HO for the Ss and instructs them to put the verbs in the brackets into the Present Continuous. Ss complete the task and check their answers with their partners. T provides the AK, T points to the sentence 1 in the same HO and elicits from the learners about the the situation and the people involved. T asks the Ss to guess the situation and the people involved for other sentences. T elicits the answers from the class. T instructs the Ss to do the activity on the second HO. Ss have to choose the correct verb form to complete the sentences. T models/demonstrates the first sentence on the board and asks the Ss to do the rest by themselves. Ss check their answers with partners. T provides the AK.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss are given the picture of a wedding ceremony and are asked to to write five questions about the people e.g. 1. How many people are sitting? 2. How many people are dancing? Ss ask and answer the questions with a partner. T monitors and takes notes.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T mingles the Ss and tells them that they are in a wedding party. Ss tal freely and T notes the examples of good language and possible mistakes the Ss make for the later feedbakck session. T provides the feedback for the Ss.
