Elementary level


In this lesson, students will learn about Scotland. The lesson will start with a discussion about colours and flags. They will learn the key vocabulary. Then they will listen a track for gist. Next, they will listen for detail and answer some questions. Finally, there will be a word search game. (If time remains, students will do a semi-controlled speaking activity on clans.)

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show Slide 1 (the Turkish flag) -Elicit the word 'flag' -Ask Students 'what colours are on the Turkish flag?' (red,white) -Show Slide 2 -Elicit the flag of Germany -what colours are on the German flag? -Show Slide 3 -Elicit the Indian flag -which flag is orange, white and green? -Show Slide 4 -Elicit Scottish flag -which flag is blue and white? (the Scottish flag or the flag of Scotland)

Pre-Listening (6-20 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Tell students they are going to write the colours they hear in the listening activity which is coming up. -Show Slide 5 -Play audio track 1.59 (colours) -Students check their answers with their partners -Ask them to spell the colours. Then write on WB -Ask if they have noticed that the missing letters are all vowels. (a,e,i,o,u) -Show Slide 6 -Ask about the man -Elicit 'Kilt' (Drill&Write) -Show Slide 7 -Elicit 'Tartan' -Tell Students they are to write down the numbers and colours of each tartan. -Listen 1.60 (about tartans) -Ss check their answers with their partners -Get the answers from Ss write on WB -Try to elicit 'Clan' (Every family has its own tartan. They wear them at special occasions. Very big families.) -Show Slide 8 -Drill (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee,Aberdeen)

While/Listening #1 (21-26 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

-Tell Ss that they are to listen an audio track and answer T/F questions about it. -Show Slide 9 -Listen 1.61 (Clans) -Ss check their answer with their partners -FB on WB

While-Listening #2 (27-35 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

-Explain Ss that they will listen two Scottish people talking about clans. They will work in pairs. Circle the correct answers in two minutes (HO) -Play 1.62 and then 1.63 (twice) -Ss check their answers with their pairs. -Show Slide 10 (FB)

Post-Listening (36-45 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the vocabulary and expand on what they've learned

-Ss in 4 groups -give word search game HOs -finish first with all the answers to win
