Description

In this lesson, Ss will read two news reports, the first one is about a couple wants to be the couple to climb Everest, the other is about a dog which wins lottery. Ss will learn how to talk about the news in the real world and how to respond to it.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using two texts about news reports
  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for proper responses for news in the context of talking about the news

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about news stories in the context of talking about the news

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss two photos of well-known Egyptian accidents. Ask students about the first photo Do you remember that man? what did he do? How did you get the news for the first time? Ask Ss about the second photo Do you know this woman? what did she do?

Pre-Reading (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss read the headlines of the text and try to guess what the texts are talking about. Show Ss some pictures of the difficult words to identify their meaning. Ss answer exercise 5b by matching the infinitive to its irregular past simple in pairs. Ss listen and practise the infinitive and the past simple.

While-Reading (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Divide Ss two groups, group A will read the first text, group B will read the second text. Work in pairs to ask each other questions from the a-e and 1-5 Monitor Ss while reading and working in pairs. Give the feedback.

Post-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Give Ss hand-outs with questions to reflect the text to their personal experience. Have you ever been in a dangerous situation before? what happened? what did you do?

Exposure/Highlighting (5-8 minutes) • to introduce Ss to the proper responses in the context of talking about the news in the real world

Ss listen to the track to tell what each story is talking about. Give Ss hand out to classify the responses according to the given emoji Ss match the statements or the question to the correct response. Ss check answers in pairs

controlled practise (3-5 minutes) • to concept check

Ss answer exercise 8a fill in the gaps with the given words. Ss check answers in pairs Give the feedback Ss listen and practise the questions and responses.
