  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about romance on the highway in the context of dating

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students: "How do you think people usually meet partners nowadays?" They will talk with their partners for 1 minute. They will share their answers with the whole class.

Initial Reading Task (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task in order to make them understand the idea of the text

Fold the handout to hide the text and ask if there might be some romance in the picture above (tollbooths). Then ask students to read the text quickly (without minding the words they don't know) and decide if the story has a happy ending or not. (3 min) When they're finished give feedback and ask why.

Detailed Reading Task 1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

Ask the students to put the events in correct order.

Detailed Reading Task 2 (7-10 minutes) • Helping students to clarify the meaning of the words they don't know.

Students will match the underlined words with the definitions in the handout. They will check their answers with their pairs.

Listening (To pick out pronunciation) (3-5 minutes) • Help students to clarify the pronunciation of specific words.

Students will listen to the recording and pay attention to pronunciation of underlined words. I will drill them after the recording is finished.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will tell a story about dating. It can be their own story or a story of their friend. They will use at least 4 underlined words out of 10. (2 minutes for preparation) Each student will tell his/her story. (2 x 3 min) I will nominate one student to share his/her story with the whole class. (2 min)
