Writing lesson tp1 / Haya Zaghal
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will have a discussion about magical and mysterious places they know about in Turkey and this would lead them into writing a paragraph for a tourism agency talking about a legend they know

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in writing descriptions of places in the context of 'Magical Places' Implementing riting. The lesson maintains the context fromthe previous two and picks up on some of the points they have discussed.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To extend Ss' awareness of distancing phrases and give them the opportunity to practice them and the descriptive language

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To Lead-in the writing task I decided to make a handout based on a 'mysterious' place in Istanbul which should be well-known for most of the Ss. I will first have small chat before showing them the handout of pictures of the Yerebtan sarinci but the questions about it will be folded to have the Ss guess everything first. then after having a class discussion about the pictures and hear all their opinions and stories,I would then ask them to open the folded paper and answer the questions on there with their partners ( PW ) after a fair amount of time a class discussion ill be opened to answer these questions and give more examples about mysterious and magical places in Turkey, I will ask some of them to show it to us on the screen projector to motivate them.

Exposure (9-11 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/writing

First I will discuss with them new vocab from the pictures : ( Columns ) I will remind them about the grammar by asking them to write two to three sentences on the board for example: (It is said that in Yerebatan sarinci, there is a special crying column) .. **QUICK FACT: As different from the other columns, Column of Tear or Crying Column, have an appearance as if it is crying since it is wet. ( It is reported that it was erected in memorial of the slaves who died during the construction of the Great Basilica). It would be a good time now to explain to the Ss that they were asked by a tourism agency to write to write a short text in English about about a place with magical powers or a legend that they know. will ask them to plan what they will write or include in their text. I will have an already prepared written examples about the task by passing around just a sentence or two from each example, will be pass around in pairs and have them discuss it.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Going first over the vocabulary needed from the picture or their personal examples. then having them make sentences about the given handout to remember the grammar given before that, this will help them understand the concept of what grammar are the expected to have on their writing task.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Will have the students write about the examples they have already mentioned about mysterious and magical before or they can give or add their own examples. if they don't know any places, will motivate them to invent their own. Will be monitoring and giving an support needed with vocab or grammar, but without distracting the students focus.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Feedback correcting their mistakes will be either by exchanging papers with a partner or might be put on the board for everyone to look at,correct and either give a heart for the ones they really liked or a plus for okay ones. that depends on the number of students that we will have that day.
