Description

In this lesson the students will read for gist and detail in order to compare two places in Thailand. Also through this, they will learn and use adjectives to describe places.

Materials

Abc H/O reading texts

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about two holiday places in Thailand.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide vocabulary practice using adjectives to describe places.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

W/B Istanbul is written in a thinking bubble. Ss imagine that a friend is coming for a holiday to Istanbul for the first time,and has asked what it is like i.e weather, tourist attractions, what they can do in the day/evening e.t.c. Ss come up to the board and write their ideas.

Productive Task reading for gist (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice productive and receptive skills through reading for gist and discussion using target language

W/B show a photo of a place in Thailand. Ask Ss to tell what they know about and to describe what they think of Thailand. T writes on W/B Ss thoughts. T shows H/O asks Ss to imagine that they are taking a trip to Thailand. Ss can choose one from two destinations by reading the two descriptions given. H/O given. S reads through both texts. P/W Ss tell their partners why they chose their destination

Reading for detail (7-9 minutes) • To provide practice in receptive and productive skills through reading for specific information and practising the language used

T writes on W/B a choice of destination and writes one activity that can be enjoyed there. Ss read through both texts again and list three things you can do in each place. P/W Ss tell their partners of their findings.Ss can change their choice of destination if they choose. Nominated Ss tell classmates their choice and why, listing descriptions and activitys and if they changed their choice and why.

Further practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide activity for Ss to read for detail.

H/O P/W Ss read through sentences describing the two destinations and choose the false sentence. Ss compare their findings with another pair. Ss give F/B to teacher 1 S finds answer underneath chair and shares with the class.

Practice of language used (8-10 minutes) • To think about and practice language from reading task.

T shows from previous stage true or false sentences on w/b and highlights comparitive adjectives and shows them in base form e.g.small,hot,crowded T gives one example of an opposite e.g small - big T writes more adjectives Ss to w/b to add opposites T elicits to each S a card with an adjective written on it. By walking around looking at their classmates cards, Ss try to find their opposites. Ss stand with their partner in order to peer check each other. Ss call out their adjectives in their pairs when peer check is complete. Ss look at new or problem words e.g. quiet,dangerous, crowded. Ss practice pronunciation through drilling.

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

W/B T places example sentences e.g. The beach is quiet. The city is noisy. Ss choose 2 adjectives of their choice and writes down a place that they know for each adjective. T writes on board Very/ really/ quite Ss look at examples with one of the words inserted in the sentence e.g. The beach is very quiet. P/W Ss describe their places to eachother using the extra vocabulary. Nominated Ss tell the class what they learnt from their partner.
