Practicing personal details

Description

In this lesson, students will review and practice asking questions and giving answers about personal details. They will listen to two conversations about Diego and Grace and will complete a chart with information about them. They will be shown a picture of Diego and Grace and will try to guess about the characters and their lives. Then they will practice listening for gist and specific information. They will do pair work, interviewing each other and will practice asking questions using contractions. At the end of the lesson they will be given role cards and they will do mingling communicative activity aimed at collecting information about their characters.

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for gist and specific information using an audio of two conversations about two people and a gap-filled chart.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice for asking and answering quesions about personal details.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To encourage students make predictions about the listening context

The students are referred to the pictures of Diego and Grace and in pairs try to guess where they are and give other ideas about their life. The teacher elicits their ideas on the WB.

Listening for gist (2-4 minutes) • To check the students' ideas

The students listen to the conversation and check if there guesses were correct. The teacher elicits whose ideas were correct.

While-Listening (2-4 minutes) • Listening for specific information

The students read the chart before listening. Then the teacher plays the recording and the students complete the information about Diego and Grace in the chart.

Post-Listening (2-4 minutes) • To check the information in the chart

The students work in pairs and check information in the chart. After that the teacher checks the ideas with the whole class

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • Practicing personal details

The students complete the questions individually. Then they do mingling activity checking their answers and asking one question to a different person. After that the teacher checks the answers with the whole class. Then the students choose a partner and interview each other asking these questions to learn personal information. Then they have to intoduce each other to the whole class.

Post-Listening Speaking Activity (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with additional practice in asking and answering questions about personal details

The students are given role cards with the description of their identity. In pairs they ask and answer the questions and write down the answers. Then they have to change the partner and describe their first partner using pronouns he/she, his/her.

Focus on contractions (3-5 minutes) • To revise the use of contractions

The students are given examples of contactions in a positive and negative sentences from the listening. Then they have to do an exercise ticking correct sentences with contractions via mingling activity. After that the teacher checks the answers with the whole class.
