The causative form

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the causative form through a TTT (teach test teach) lesson plan, the lesson starts with a display of two pictures and eliciting of the marker sentences. Then, students do the first exercise (test) which diagnose their ability and familiarity with the grammar point, this followed by a clarification stage (teach), where the language point is explained in details including meaning, form and pronunciation. At the end students are tested again (test) through a controlled-practice of various exercises.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of causatives in the context of having something done and getting someone to do something.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of the causative through multiple exercises.
  • To provide a speaking and writing controlled-practice of the causative form

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Teacher displays two pictures and elicit marker sentences from students.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

- Students are asked to do the first exercise o the smart board. -Once done students are asked to check their answers with their partners. - Teacher does a whole class feedback.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

- Teacher displays the presentation on the smart board. -Teacher explains the grammar point starting with meaning and going through the form and pronunciation. -Teacher asks CCQs to check understanding of the grammar point

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

-SS work the exercises on the Round up 5 in pairs. -SS check their answers with each others. -For Feedback, teacher does a whole class feedback. -Teacher compares the first test to the second one.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- On page 138, students are required to look at the two pictures and form sentences with causative discussing them with their partners. - On the same page, students have to complete a letter using the sentences from the speaking activity. - Students share their letters with the class.
