Description

In this lesson, students will practise listening in the context of Canada and places to see in Canada.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Canada and tourist destinations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about tourist destinations in the context of Canada

Procedure

Lead in (4-7 minutes) • To set lesson context

Show the students the video about Canada, but skip the part that says "Canada". In pairs, tell them to guess where this place is. Ss work in opairs to guess the country.

Warm-up (5-7 minutes) • To engage students in the context

Ask Ss to describe the flag of Canada. Ss describe the flag of Canada. (T-S interaction|) Show a world map on the board (ppt1) and ask them where Canada is on the map. Ask general questions about Canada such as weather, population, capital city etc. Ss share their knowledge about Canada

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Tell Ss that they are going to listen two people talk about their holiday in Canada. Tell them to listen. After listening, in pairs Ss put the photos in the order they hear them. At the end, some Ss holding the photos come to the board and the class put them into the correct order.

Useful Language (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Tell Ss listen again and tick the words and expressions they hear. Then, compare their answers with their partners. Ss listen and compare their answers. Then, as a class we check the answers

Productive Task-1 (6-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Show Ss the photos used in the exposure part. In pairs, tell them to imagine this was their Cross Canada trip and talk about the photos. Ss talk about their Canada trip using the phrases and the photos. In the second part of the task, in groups, Ss talk about if they would like to visit these places and give reasons. Ss present their ideas to the class.

Productive Task-2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Show the information about Canadian tourist destinations. Tell Ss to read it silently. Then, in pairs, tell them to discuss the questions in Ex3 using the "Useful Language" box given. After that, Ss share their ideas with the class. Ss share their ideas with their partners and share their ideas with the class.
