Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information, detailed, deduction and inference listening practice using a text about " in the context of phone dialogues

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of phone dialogues

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show a video for almost 1m50secs about the evolution of the communication and try to elicit the context of the lesson. I also have second part of the lead- in which includes a photo of an old phone and a phone books where we are going to reach to numbers and how to pronounce them.

Pre-Listening (9-11 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Tell them that they are going to listen to 2 phone numbers and ask them to focus on the numbers. -Listen point 1.68 and ask them what they hear. - 2 nominated students will say 2 phone numbers. - Listen again and repeat. (drill) - Tell them that we will listen to 1.69 and they will have a H.O. (Phone shape). - Give the instruction and tell them that they are going to underline the phone number they hear. They are going to listen once. - ICQ: Are we going to listen the phone numbers? Yes : Are we going to underline what we hear? Yes : Are we working in pairs? No : Are we going to listen once? Yes - Then after we finish ask them to peer check. -Nominated students tell the answer. - Project the answers on the board. - Tell them that with mimes "make call" is do a ring, "get a call" is receive a call. - Show it on the board in presentation as well. - Tell them that they are going to listen 3 phone dialogues and they will write on a piece of paper the correct word makes or gets. - Ask them to write on a piece of paper for each one.( individual) - After listening ask them to work in pairs and check the answers. - Nominated students tells the answers - Write the answers on the board 1- gets , 2- makes 3, gets

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

- Tell them that they will listen the dialogues again. Decide if the sentences are True or False. Correct the false sentences. -Show the H.O. and give them. - Let them to read the dialogues - They will work in groups. - 1) True 2)False, Dave says it isn't a good time 3)False ( Sam calls Mr. Green, who isn't there. He is at the airport 4) False, ( He is not there) 5) False ( He wants to call Simon) 6) True - Nominated students from the groups tells the answers and ask some other people to answer the next one.

While-Listening #2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Tell them that to listen 2 more dialogues and complete the notes. - Show the H.O. and ask them to fill in the gaps then check with their pairs. - Monitor - Nominated students answer.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Tell them that H.O. will be given and show the cards to ( 4 different conversation groups) - Divide group A and group B. Then divide each one according to the numbers. ( 1 to 4) . - Ask them to find their pairs A1 will match with A2. - Elicit some of the expressions and write them on the board. Is Mr. Beach there, please? Would you like to leave a message? I'd like to speak to Joe, please - Monitor - Ask nominated pair to talk
