Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text titled as "Making a Difference" in the context of achievements

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of personal experience words in the context of achievements
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about making a difference in the context of ac
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of achievements

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The learners are presented with some pictures related to the reading text in order to set lesson context and engage them. They are asked to view the pictures and share their ideas and guesses regarding the reading text.

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The learners are put in pairs and then distributed a worksheet including a gap-fill exercise. They read it first and then complete the blanks while watching a video.

Skim-Reading

The learners are distributed a question paper which has paragraph numbers from the target text and and topics of them to match. After the students individually complete matching topics with the paragraph numbers, they compare their answers with their pair. In the answer session, the teacher gives feedback and correction if needed.

While-Reading #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with a gist and specific information reading task

The learners are instructed to do the multiple choice questions while reading the text in detail. After they complete answering the questions, they are expected to compare their answers with the a friend sitting next to them. In the end, the learners answer the questions by taking turns as whole class activity and the teacher gives feedback. When needed, correction is also given by the teacher.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The learners are required to individually scan the text in order to find a word/phrase and write them next to their definition in the exercise. After they complete their own answer, they do peer check. In the end, they give their answers and the teacher gives feedback and correction.

Post-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The learners are given post-reading questions first to speak about them in pairs and then answer them as a whole class activity if time allows. When time is up, they present their answers to the class and the teacher gives feedback.
