Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of collocations in the context of weekend activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of weekend activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In pairs, sts discuss what they do on weekends, and take notes. For FB (feedback), ask sts about their partner. If the TL (target language) vocab comes up you can clarify MFP (Meaning/Form/Pronunciation) here, as it comes up.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Suggest the TL (target language i.e. Vocab) verbs (Listen, Play, Read, Study, Talk, Check) and elicit collocator nouns and phrases e.g. email, on the phone, with friends, to music, basketball, etc. . Clarify MFP (meaning, form and pronunciation) all along. Use BB (blackboard) for this.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To test, and provide an opportunity to practice, target productive skills

In pairs (might consider changing the pairs here if convenient), sts match verbs and nouns and phrases for correct collocation (from slide 2 of ppt. (the 1st non-blank slide)). There are some extra (nouns) to throw them off a bit. During monitoring, try to find out if some fell for them.

Semi-controlled Practice (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

FCs (Flashcards) (from the last slides of ppt. file; you have to print them out) of words are put ''face-down'' on the BB (blackboard) (you will need magnets) in two grps one for the verbs and one for the phrases and nouns (could consider putting it one big group on the BB(blackboard)). Class is divided in two or three teams. Volunteers from each team take turns uncovering one card from each group. If they find a match and recognize it, they now have to form a complete sentence, beginning with ''On the weekends'' or something equally good; to get a point for their team. If teams give help or instructions in Chinese they either lose their turn or a point.

Semi-controlled Practice 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

As a WC (whole class), randomly picked sts come up with more possible collocations. T might suggest more verbs from vocab, or explain that now they may come up with any combination (collocations) to describe weekend activities. If the subject of weekend activities seems to have been used up, T might deviate a bit and ask about holidays or evenings. This can be made into a relaxed class discussion type activity, or can remain competitive by keeping teams as in previous stage and giving points for good answers.
