Description

In this lesson ss learn about gerunds. They will learn the use of gerunds after prepositions, as subjects vs objects, in the negative and positive and question forms. There is not enough time to compare with infinitives for this lesson. It will mainly be a grammar lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of gerunds in the context of movies

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a sentence in gerund in the context of movies and to provide speaking to practice accuracy

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- To regroup students - To show the pictures of famous movies - To ask students if they know the movies - To make sentences with TL (Do you like going to the movies, I like watching Rocky etc.)

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- To put in pw - To distribute the H/O to wc - To tell the students to work on their own and then to check with their peers - To distribute the answer key (1 per group)

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- To distribute the H/O - To tell to work in pairs - To do the FB with the WC for some of them - To distribute answer key. 1 per each table

Clarification (7-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- To go over the form and pronunciation of gerunds. - subject vs object - positive negative - questions - v after preposition rule

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- To distribute the H/O - To tell to work in pairs - To distribute the answer key (1 per each table)

Semi controlled practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check further and to get students to do first semi-controlled practice

- To distribute the H/O - To tell to be student A and student B and do the speaking practice. - To monitor and take notes for delayed error correction

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- To do the modelling for the group writing practice - To ask one person from each group to pick their H/O for their group to work on. - To get the ss to write on the WB their sentences - To finalize with necessary error corrections.
