Description

In this lesson students will write an informal facebook message in the context of reconnecting with grammar school friends.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of an informal letter using an online Facebook-style format in the context of reconnecting with primary school friends.

Subsidiary Aims

  • VOCABULARY: To provide clarification of letter writing words in the context of reconnecting with primary school friends
  • FUNCTIONAL LANGUAGE: To provide clarification of language used for formal and informal expressions related to formal and informal letters.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Pre-load PPT and MP4 files on classroom HD. Test video and audio, set screen to "blank." Show slide 1, ask prediction questions: "Who is this?" "What is she doing?" "Where is she?" Elicit immediate responses from WC. Distribute finger-out with gist video questions. BLANK SCREEN. "Look at this video and try to answer the questions after" Play video. SS "Work in groups to answer questions" Elicit "writing letters" and "informal / formal letter"

Useful Language (3-4 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Distribute vocabulary HO and PPT copy on WB Instruct ss to match words to definitions/pictures FB: nominate students to come to the board to draw the proper line

Productive Task(s) (9-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Distribute Exercise "salutations" ask them to connect FB: Distribute key, elicit ONLY difference between which are formal examples and which are not. Distribute key and tell them to look at it for homework. Distribute Exercise Informal email / formal letter FB: Elicit WC feedback, distribute key

Preparing to write (4-5 minutes) • Prepare specific details for writing exercise; Exposure to model Facebook message

Open PPT "North Country" slide, show people from my school past, highlight Jessica first girlfriend, show Facebook icon and inform that "we are friends again" DIstribute personal questionnaire, instruct ss to complete Show PPT slide email to Jessica. Solicit type of correspondence [email/msg/] and tie to idea of informal letter writing.

Writing Task (15-16 minutes) • To develop oral fluency through a writing task; to develop writing skills in relation to writing a Facebook message

PPT Facebook letter to Jessica remains on the entire time. Distribute Facebook blank template. Instruct ss to write a message to old best friend, teacher, or first boyfriend and girlfriend. Monitor: to help start process, after a short time, Feedback: conduct error correction on WB for 2-3 sentences garnered from ss

Feedback (8-9 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Monitor: with pen and paper for delayed error correction. Feedback: conduct error correction on WB for 2-3 sentences garnered from ss

Letter Swap (3-4 minutes) • WC interaction to read and exchange letters

Instruct pairs of tables to swap letters with another table Instruct them to read them and guess who is the author. SS stand up, go to other table and find real author.
