Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about two men who met a bear in the context of journey

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of past perfect tense in the context of journey


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks the SS a few questions (Where do we get our food from? Who grows food? Why do they grow it? Is there a lot of farmers now or more people work in the cities?) Ss answer them. T tells that "We will read a story about two men who were going to the city to look for job"

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T show a picture and tries to elicit what happened on it from the SS. SS work in groups and come up with the ideas. T nominates SS from the groups to tell what they think happened.

Pre-teaching vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows PPP slide with the target vocabulary. Mime and let the SS guess the words.

While-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T gives out cutouts to match (group work) SS work in groups. T monitors. T gives out text as an answer key

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T tells the SS to read the text for 2 minutes and answer the questions Check in pairs. Listening for FB

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Project the PPT slide on the board "The man came down from the tree after the bear had gone " Ask SS which action happened first. (meaning) Draw a timeline on the board Underline had and past participle,(form) Drill the sentence.(pronunciation)

Post-Reading and Grammar Practice (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Tell the SS to answer the questions using past perfect tense. Give out HO with questions SS write the answers T monitors, make notes for delayed error correction Pair check, make notes for delayed error correction Nominate the SS for FB, ask for justifications (what happened first) Delayed-error correction.
