Description

In this lesson, the students learn Present Simple and Present Continuous through guided discovery based on a reading text about a man in the context of Activities of daily life. The lesson starts with a discussion on the routine activities the students do every day. This is followed by reading two materials that focus on the target language. After clarification, the students practice the concept through controlled and semi controlled practice. If time allows, the students also do a freer practice task in groups.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Show the Ss pictures of a boy doing activities of daily life. wake up, brush teeth, eat breakfast, read/study, play etc. - Ask the Ss, 'What can you understand from these pictures?' 'What is the boy doing?' - Aim is to elicit 'every day activities' and make a story - Talk about all the pictures. The boy wakes up, brushes teeth, eats breakfast.. etc. - Use present simple tense while talking - Keep language graded and use simple words - Ask the students, What do you do regularly/every day? What are you doing right now?

Exposure and Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for and draw students' attention to Present Simple and Present Continuous through a text

- The students are exposed to the context through two reading materials about a man named, 'Nigel'. - The first material tells about what Nigel does every day in his routine. - The second material tells about Nigel on a holiday with his family right now. - The students read the two materials and listen to them as well. - The aim is to introduce them to the Present Simple and Present Continuous tense.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of Present simple and Present Continuous tenses

- Divide the students in groups of 3 - Distribute the HO for Guided discovery - Tell them that there is one sentence taken from each text which they just read - In groups, instruct them to work on the meaning of the sentences - Do WC feedback on board - Instruct students to work on the form of the sentences - Once done, do WCFB on board - DRILLING - Model and drill the two sentences

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- The students remain seated in their groups - Give HO to the students - They do Task 1 independently - Once done, they check answers with their group members - For FB, distribute AK to students - Ask them to check their answers

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- The students remain seated in their groups - They do Task 2 independently - Demonstrate the task by doing one sentence as an example - They may take help/give help to group mates - Monitor students while they are writing and take notes for delayed error correction - For FB, three students come and write sentences on the board - Discuss the noted errors (if any) - The students are instructed to do Task 3 independently - Demonstrate the task by doing one sentence as an example - They may take help/give help to group mates - Monitor students while they are writing and take notes for delayed error correction - For FB, three students come and write sentences on the board - Discuss the noted errors (if any)

Free Practice (Optional) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of Present Simple and Present Continuous

- The students remain seated in their groups. - They have completed Task 2 and Task 3 in Semi Controlled Practice. - They read out their sentences to their group members. - Then the students talk about what they are doing right now. - The students speak about different activities that they do often. - The aim is to practice speaking the TL
