Description

In this lesson ss will practice and drill vocabulary to asses the students' ability to talk about food in everyday life. There will be controlled practice followed by free speaking exercises.

Materials

Main Aims

  • VOCABULARY: To provide clarification of words related to edibles in the context of food and health

Subsidiary Aims

  • SPEAKING: To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of food and health.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • Turkish Breakfast Topic: set lesson context and engage ss

Preload PPT and Strawberry Smoothie video on class computer. Show PPT slide of Turkish Breakfast SS in table groups write as many names of the foods (in english) that are featured in Turkish breakfast. Divide WB into six quadrants. Nominate each group to send secretary to write names of foods. If a certain group had an item unique to the others, point to that table and have them teach the whole class that exact word. if WC misses an obvious food item, add to vocab recap in next stage.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for TL through smoothie video

Distribute Smothie HO and instruct ss to tick off boxes as they see items in video Play video Cursory FB, only clarify if someone didn't tick a box.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the target language

Distribute vocab cutouts to each table, match them. Peer feedback with table that gets it right. On WB make two big boxes, elicit names of both fruits and veggies, put them in either box, then elicit the macro name "fruits" and "vegetables" for both. Fruits will be easy. Veggies tougher: get onion in there, and elicit carrot to jump start elicitation.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for more meaningful practice

Semi-Controlled Practice (9-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

At the Market Game, students in pairs ask each other if they have vocab items. DIvide ss into pairs, A + B Distribute separate HO to both A + B They are roommates and need to check each other's grocery list. [do we need/did you buy] Monitor to ensure ss practice concept. No FB

Free Practice (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Show PPT of "Healthy vs. Unhealthy" two men picture. Show PPT of "Turkish Breakfast vs. Healthy Strawberry Smoothie" Distribute debate points and instruct same pairs to discuss topic

Closing Hot Seat Game [OPTIONAL] (5-10 minutes) • To provide final repetition of Vocabulary, Time-fill

Conduct hot seat game using lesson vocabulary. Use only if lesson plan runs short.
