Upper Intermediate level


In this lesson, students will learn about the usage of adverbs, adjectives and time expressions. The lesson will start with a short video to give them an idea about the context of the lesson followed by some tasks to practice the use of Adjectives, adverbs and time expressions in the context of writing of story.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in writing a story on different topics..and to practice usage of adverbs, adjectives and time expressions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give clarification of adverbs, adjectives, time expressions and narrative tenses through a series of tasks
  • To practice speaking in the context of story they wrote.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss are going to see a short video and then I will ask them to answer me these questions: 1) Is the video interesting? 2) Does anything similar happened to them ever?

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will ask Ss to read the text (exercise a), gist reading, and will ask them to read this through without filling the gaps.

Useful Language (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss will be asked in pair/groups to look at exercise b and put the listed adjectives and adverbs in the blanks of story. Feedback will be done with whole class to check the answers. After that Ss will be asked to look at exercise d and complete these time expressions in pairs/groups Answers will be checked with whole class as open class feedback.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will be asked in pairs/groups to go through the instructions of exercise e and decide which story to write and discuss what the plot is going to be. After they have selected the beginning sentence of the story Ss will be asked to plan the content as written in exercise f. I will remind students at this time to write only one story starting with one sentence. Once the instruction are completed i will ask them to start writing. Ss will be guided to include adverbs, adjectives, time expressions and narrative sentences and re-write the 120-180 word story by practicing all of them. But if there is less time i will ask them to share your 50 words text on the wall and walk around the room and read which one is more interesting. etc.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Once they have completed writing text of 120-180 words, I will ask students feedback and error correction on their production
