Description

The Ss will learn to speak the functional language (How about, we could and let's go) in the context of inviting people in different situations. They will also listen to an audio clip in order to better understand the topic. Later, they will do controlled and semi-controlled exercises to master the TL.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for inviting people in the context of Programs and Places.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice through pair discussion, role play in the context of Programs and Places.
  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about invitation in the context of Programs and Places.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- Show Ss the pictures of different programs, events, and places 2- Elicit the context i.e., 'Programs and Places' and ask them whether they have been to any such places?

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1- Ask Ss a question- 'Where are the couple in the audio clip going?' before starting the clip 2- Play the audio clip and make Ss answer the above-mentioned question (gist listening) 3- Distribute the HO and have Ss do gap fills after listening to audio clip again (listening for specific information) 4- Project exercise on board and give answers with FB 5- Tell the Ss that TL is used to invite people by highlighting them on board

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1- Instruct and model the guided discovery exercises on board 2- Distribute the HO and have Ss do the exercises (The Ss will observe the model on board and try to solve questions in the HO accordingly) 3- Solve the exercises on board by clarifying the TL and giving FB

Controlled Practice (15-18 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1- Divide Ss into pairs (A,B) 2- Give graded instructions 3- Distribute HOs but tell them just to read the HOs 4- In the meanwhile, explain the rules of the activity (Model on board) Rules: -A Ss will be given separate sheets having different schedule -B Ss will be given separate sheets having different schedule -Every Ss will be given three places(events) to invite his partner using TL -One partner will question the other according to the question set-up given in the HOs -Other partner will respond to the question according to his/her schedule and answer set-up given in HOs -Ss will write the question they will ask and the answer they will give using the event invitation cards 5- Have Ss start the game in pairs 6- Monitor and do hot air correction 7- Conclude the game by clarifying confusions and giving FB

Semi-Controlled Practice (12-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

1- Give the instructions related to the second game(role play) 2- Model the role-play on board with the help of one Ss Rules: -Ss will be divided into four equal groups i.e., A, B, C and D -Group A will sit against group B and group C will sit against group D (in pairs) -Ss will ask questions and answer them in pairs 3- Distribute the HOs related to the role play 4- Have Ss begin the game and ask the questions according to the model on the board 5- Monitor for delayed correction 6- Conclude the role play by correcting mistakes and giving FB 7- Conclude the lesson by telling the Ss to hang their first role play activity on the board and wall in order to make it easy for other Ss to know about each other's performance.
