Upper-intermediate level

In this lesson, the students will have the opportunity to review and clarify the usage of 4 grammar tenses used to to talk about the future. The lesson starts with a short video and discussion that links this session to the previous one. Then, the students will be tested in their understanding of the future tenses and they'll have the chance to explain to their classmates the differences between some of the tenses. Finally, they will be tested again and will be given the chance to discuss their answers with their peer. Finally, they'll connect the topic with their real lives in order to generate a discussion around eco-friendly houses.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of the future tenses (be going to, present cont., present simple and future simple) based on a pevious listening task in the context of eco-friendly houses.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the future aspects of the future simple, be going to, present cont. and present simple in order to improve their usage.
  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in discussions based on the context of eco-friendly houses.

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To refresh the context set from the previous lesson and engage students

SS watch a video about an eco-house in India. In a HO, SS fill in a chart the characteristics of that house. In pairs, SS compare their answers. Then, SS talk about how different their houses are from the one in the video.

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

SS get a HO with 6 sentences, written in different grammar structures, expressing future situations. SS match the sentences with their meanings, the grammar tenses and their forms. SS compare their answers with a partner. WC FB using the chart projected on the WB.

Teach (7-9 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T displays 2 sets of sentences, taken from the previous task, on the WB to be contrasted (going to Vs pres. cont.[plans] and will Vs going to[predictions]) In pairs, SS analyze the difference in meaning of both sets. T nominates some SS to explain the differences between the sentences. If mispronunciation is noticed, the sentences are drilled. T displays another sentence with "will" to be contrasted with the previous one. SS tell the difference in meaning. T displays a final sentence using the present simple. SS explain how this sentence has a future meaning.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use and understanding of the target language.

SS get a HO with a dialogue. SS have to choose the correct verbs to complete the dialogue. In groups, SS check their answers. Then, SS discuss and write on the HO, why they chose those verbs. WC FB with the dialogue displayed on the WB.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

SS get a HO with a chart to fill in. SS think about how green are their own houses. They fill in the chart with what they're doing, what are their plans and what they can't do in order to have an eco-friendlier house. In groups, SS share their answers. Finally, SS decide who, among the group, has the greenest house (or the best plan to make his/her house greener)
