Main Aims

  • To provide the Ss with reading for gist and specific information practice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with the opportunity to speak about embarrassing political situations with the goal of increasing fluency
  • To provide review and practice of vocabulary related to embarrassment

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- show the students a photo of George Bush and ask the Ss his job to elicit "politician" - say "let's watch a video with George Bush in it" and show the video with the Iraqi journalist throwing his shoes at Bush - ask the Ss to talk in pairs to discuss how Bush must have felt to elicit "embarrassed" - ask the Ss reading question 1 from page 60

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- say "we will read two texts about two different politicians, but first let's check some words together - put the Ss in groups of three of four depending on the number of Ss and give them the words and definitions that are cut into strips - ask them to match the words with the definitions and monitor - ask groups to check each other's answers - IF they have any problems with any of the words, pre-teach - tell them that if they want the words, they will get it at the end of the lesson

While-Reading #1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

- show the Ss pictures of the two politicians with some background information - tell the Ss that we will read two different texts about it - half the group will read about Gloystein and the other half will read about Prescott - give the Ss HO2 with the two texts folded over and colour coded (one group will read about Gloystein and the other group will read about Prescott) - show them Reading Ex. 2 on OHP "What mistakes did these two men make?" - give them 2 minutes to quickly read and discuss in their groups afterwards

While-Reading #2 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed reading task

- ask all of the Ss to stand up and find a student with a different colour HO and sit together - they will open the HO and look at both texts now - they will look at questions from Reading Ex 3 and decide who did these things - the Ss will put a G if they think Gloystein did it, or a P if they think Prescott did it

Post-Reading 1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- show the Ss questions from Reading Ex. 4 on the OHP - they will discuss in pairs - do WCFB after

Post-Reading 2 (3-4 Minutes) (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with the opportunity to further practice the vocabulary involved in the lesson

- tell the Ss that we will look at the words again - show them the Vocab exercise 1 (1-g) on OHP and give them the HO - they will work in pairs to complete the gap fill exercise - WCFB on the WB after

Post Reading 3 (4-5 minutes) • To provide Ss with the opportunity to practice with speaking about the context and tell anectodes

- Still looking at the HOs this time ask the Ss to rank them from the most embarrassing to the least embarrassing and talk about why - Show the last question on the WB (Speaking and Vocab Ex. 3) - ask them to discuss in PW - do WCFB after
