The focus of this lesson is on grammar. Students will learn how to use "Should have" through the general context of "Politically Incorrect" which they had studied in the previous session. They also will learn the correct pronunciation of "Should have" and "Shouldn't have" through the listening to the audio file 1.39 from SB page 61

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of "should have" in the context of politically incorrect

  • To provide deduction and specific information listening practice using a text about "Should have" in the context of Politically Incorrect

Procedure

Stage 1 (Warmer/Lead-in) (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Greet and welcome Ss to the class -Introduce myself -Display the photo of Groystein and Prescott on OHP, so they can connect with the general context of the previous lesson and this lesson

Stage 2 (Exposure) (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Instruct the Ss to listen to the audio file 1.39 (activity 1) and complete the sentences with Should or Shouldn't. Activity 1 SB page 61 -Give the Ss the HO of the above activity -Pair them so they can compare their answers -Monitor during the above activity -Play the audio file one more time, so they can check their answers -Give them FB -Pair the Ss and instruct them to do activity 2 from SB page 61 -FB

Stage 3 (Highlighting) (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Ask the Ss to see if they find similarities (Grammar) in the sentences of the activity 1 SB page 61(in pair) -Ask the Ss what were the similarities in the sentences of the above activity

Stage 4 (Clarification) (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Write "He should have ignored it on the WB -Ask CCQs to elicit e.g. is it in the past or present? (Past), Did Prescott ignored it or punched the man? (He punched him), was the speaker happy about Prescott action? (No), Did he think that Prescott should have acted differently? (Yes) -Clarify all the form on the WB with color coding

Stage 5 (Controlled Practice) (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Instruct the Ss to do activity 2 from WB page 36. "Choose appropriate response, a or b to the sentences 1-6" -Give the Ss HO of the above activity -In pairs they have to check their answers -Give FB to the above activity

Stage 6 (Free Practice) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Instruct the Ss to write 5 mistakes that they had made in their life (Activity 3 from SB page 61) -Instruct them to write sentences about those mistakes by using SHOULD AND SHOULN'T -Group them, and instruct them to read their sentences and mistakes in group -Monitor them, so if any error encounter, use delay error correction

Stage 7 (Optional-based on time ) (Semi-Controlled Practice) (5-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-Group the Ss -Instruct the Ss to write one sentence with "Should" and "Shouldn't" for each of 4 pictures in group -Ask the Ss for FB
