Description

In this lesson, SS learn to how to describe the weather and they will be introduced to new words in that context through the topic "when to go". This lesson starts with showing SS the calendar, that will be followed by the reading for gist task and the reading for detail task.The lesson ends with a productive writing task.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about when to go on holidays in the context of geography

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show SS photos of a calendar and elicit the word (calendar) divide them into groups of 3-4 get them to order months cut ups in their groups (potential): tell SS the first group to finish shout "bingo" out loud. other groups go and check their answers check each other answers write months in order on WB with drilling Show SS photo of the four seasons elicit them write the season under the photo *drill them pass out HO's Have SS answer the questions what is this month with gestures? what is the next month? what was the last month? show SS one winter and one summer photos on WB teacher asks which months are summer in turkey? and hang summer's months under the photo teacher asks which months are winter in turkey? and hang winter's months under the photo

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

teacher show pics (wet, dry, sunny, hot, warm, cool, cold) have SS to read the text and tell them that you have to find words for these photos pass out the text SS have 1-2 minutes to read try to elicit the words from the text write the words under the photos

While-Reading/Listening #1 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

have SS do reading ex 1-b instructions: read the text again show them the questions sheet tell them to read and answer the questions SS have 6 minutes to find the answers the third question: Rome in July; hot and (busy) second, fourth and fifth questions ask why 2- no it's very hot 4- yes it's warm and dry 5- no it's hot and very wet check with your partner WC check

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

SS in their groups: "with your partners" have SS to write "when to go" text like the one they've read tell SS to use the words (wet, dry, sunny, hot, warm, cool, cold) to write the text teacher checks and gives help where necessary when SS finish teacher nominates a few SS to read their text ask the other groups if they agree

show SS pictures around turkey and the world have students to speak about a place they visited students take few minutes to get ready and make notes then tell the WC about it
