Description

In this lesson; students learn the meaning of past continuous by speaking and reading. The lesson starts with a speaking part where students learn the meaning of `embarrassing` and as e lead in they are introduced some situations which they should put on a scale. As a gist reading task they match three of the situations to the texts. As a detailed reading task' they answer to some questions about the text and they finish the lesson by speaking about their most embarrassing moments.

Materials

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about teachers' embarrasing moments in the context of schools and teachers

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of schools and teachers

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Tell the students an embarrassing story of yours. 2. Show them the embarrassing situations and check their understanding on them. (What happens when you wear a different dress to a party? etc.) 3. Tell the students that they will work in pairs and put the sentences in order, according to their level of embarrassment, from the least to the most. Give them the handout and tell them they have 2 minutes. 4. Classroom check and feedback.

Initial Reading Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to gist reading

1. Tell them to work in pairs. Tell the students that they will read and match 3 of the situations to the texts. Give them the text. Tell them they have 5 minutes. 2. Classroom check and feedback

Detailed Reading Task (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to do detailed reading task

1. Tell them to work in groups. Give them the questions and tell them to answer the questions. Answer the first question to provide model. Give them 10 minutes. 2. Open the questions on the board and check the answers. Give feedback.

Speaking Practice (8-10 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

1. Tell the students to work in groups. Give them instructions like "do you remember my story?" And give them 5 minutes to talk in groups about their most embarrassing moments. 2. WC feedback

Language Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with introduction of the task language

Give them hints about the new grammar by writing some of the sentences in past continuous and correcting them.
