Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of prepositions of place in the context of where.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of answering the question where with the proper prep of place.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set the context of prepositions of place using a physical object (phone, pen, pencil) or yourself to demonstrate. Put the object or person "on" something and ask the students to tell you 'where it is.'

Exposure/Build Context (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Do sentence #1 from the Exposure HO #1. Then pass out the HO and have students complete it alone. Not in pairs. Peer check then WC FB. Provide the T/F HO and have each student complete this alone. Then peer check (divide the questions up). WC FB for light Error Correction.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Example sentences: We are at ITI. We are in class.

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

CCQ: Meaning - What do these words (in, at, on, beside, near) tell us? Ans - where Form - We are class in. Ans - We are in class. (We're in class.) Pronunciation - should be no need to highlight this area.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Have the students complete the HO individually, not in pairs. Peer check. Have students come to the WB and fill in one question. Then allow them to nominate someone else to come and fill in a question. WC FB - Check the answers together and have some minor error correction

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Have the students find one other person (have them stand as a class and find someone) and interview them with the questions on the handout.

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students return to their seats and work in pairs. They need to read their sentences to each other and guess who their partner was speaking to. Some error correction is appropriate to help with accuracy in speaking in anticipation of the next lesson.

Additional Activity (5-10 minutes) • Practice

If another activity is needed us the "A flat by the river" HO. Have students work in pairs. They will alternate asking/answering questions. Most likely they will peer check as they go.
