Description

In this lesson, students will practice and develop receptive (reading & listening) skill from a conversation between a husband and wife who are about to set off on holiday. Students will practice speaking skills asking and answering questions Learn new words and phrases from the speaking activity .Encourage students to discuss in pairs about their ideas on packing a bag for a holiday.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practise in vocabulary to describe everyday objects and items we might take on holiday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice and specific information and detailed reading and listening practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will have a suitcase in the class and items to put in the suitcase. Tell ss that 'I'm going on holiday and this is my suitcase. I will take my white T-shirt, a pair of trousers, walking shoes, a camera, a book, my flight ticket, mobile phone, purse, sunglasses, a (British) passport.Elicit the names. Tell ss to draw their own suitcase and objects. Collect the suitcases and get ss into groups of 4/5. Handout 'suitcases' back to ss randomly.Talk with their group about what is in each suitcase. For FB, I will ask sts randomly if everyones packed the similar things.

'Exposure' (8-10 minutes) • To introduce and give Ss practice in the target vocabulary.

Tell ss to look at the picture on the HO and talk with your partner 'What can you see?, 'How many things can you say in English? (5min) Write answers on WB.Eliciting and drilling. Ss modeling the activity and using the items given by the T, roleplaying using useful language on the WB, eg: I think the camera is a good idea. Mmm, I agree. We can take an alarm clock and a magazine. Neg; I don't agree. I think the dictionary is more important. Useful language on WB. Pretend you are packing for holiday with your partner, choose 5 things to take (depending on the number of male and female, create a couple- husband and wife to do the roleplay).For FB, I will ask ss if anyones packed anything different from the list on the W/B.

While-Reading and Listening (8-10 minutes) • To read and listen for specific informations.

1- Introducing Walter & Thelma by getting ss attention on the picture on HO2. With your partner talk about Who are these 2 people?Husband and wife. Where are they?in the car. Where are they going?To the airport. Going on holiday. FB from ss. Show dialogue next to the picture and tell ss that we will listen and read to follow Walter and Thelma's conversation in the car while they are going to the airport. CD 1.78 In PW discuss what is was the conversation between the couple? Ask the following questions to class for FB. Who turned off the lights? Thelma What did Walter want for Thelma to pack?his book Do they have the Ipod?No Do they have the guide book? Yes (Guide book-book for tourists that provides information about a place) Who packed the bags? Thelma Thomson 2- In PW again make a 'To do list' Ask ss about 'What do you do before you go on holiday?' example: turn off the lights/electricity, turn off the water, computer, tv, close the doors / windows. FB get the ss to Mime these phrases. (the suitable ones)

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ask Ss to read the text again and tick which objects did Walter and Thelma have in the car. They had the following things in the car: digital camera, mobile phone, book, guide book, plane tickets. Stick 7 pictures around the class and the names randomly on the walls. Put the ss into 2 groups and play a race game by matching the pictures with the correct name to the wb. First group that completes the task correctly wins the game.

While-Listening (4-7 minutes) • To listen for detailed information

Listen to Walter and Thelma at the airport. CD1.79 What is the problem? Forgot the passports. Who didn't remember to put the passports? Walter Did they get on the plane? No What was Thelma's reaction? Not happy Ss practise reading the dialogue in pairs.
