Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with understanding and clarification of usage of adjectives as nouns and order of adjectives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and give students practice of speaking using vocabulary, adjectives as nouns and adctive order

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will write "OLD and ELDERLY" on the WB and go through it with the class. I will discuss the difference and will also explain that elderly is only used for people and is more polite. To check the students they have understood I will ask a CCQ "Can i say an elderly pen"? (Of-course not).

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To expose Ss to the target language in context through a text or situation in this categorizing the adjectives according to connotation to help them think about meaning.

I will give Ss ex 1a and ask them to look at the adjectives and make sure they know the meaning of all the adjectives. I will go through the meaning of adjectives(vocabulary) with the class and will ask students to work in groups and pairs to find out which ones describe teenagers and which ones describe elderly people. Once they are finished i will elicit their answers on the board. After completing this activity i will ask students to look at ex 1b and make sure if they know the meaning of 'Stereotypes' and 'to conform'. I will ask students to work in pairs and groups to discuss these three questions. Students will be monitored deeply while they are talking to rectify their problems on spot. If student are not clear, then the question will be discussed in whole class.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To encourage Ss to notice the TL

Ss will be given ex 3a (Grammar, using adjectives as noun, adjective order) and will be timed to tick or cross each option. They will be asked to discuss with their partners why they think some options are wrong. After completing the discussion their answers will be checked.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To focus Ss MFP of the TL

Students will be asked to look at ex 3b & p 135 for proper explanation of Adjectives as nouns. They should already have a good knowledge of nationality adjectives in english. Ss will listen to the recording and will be asked to repeat after every sentence. After that they will be explained Rule 1 for nationalities and then adjective order.

Guided Discovery (3-5 minutes) • For further checks

Ss will be given guided discovery with feedback and students will be given the key for further self-check.

Controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • To check students understanding of M&F

For checking of proper Ss understanding of meaning and form. Ss will be asked to solve (p 135 ex a). They will work now in new groups and pairs to put "the + adjective" instead of the underlined phrases. I will monitor each pair to help them if needed and to make sure they are following the instruction correct. Answers will be checked with whole class.

Semi-Controlled practice and Freer practice (4-5 minutes) • To further consolidate the TL and allow for some production.

The new paired Ss will be given ex 3c and will be asked to further consolidate the TL and write the adjectives in brackets in the right place. I will go to each group to make sure they are talking about the sentences and to encourage the silent members of each group. When they are done I will ask each group one sentences and they will tell me if they agree with that and why they agree or disagree.
